The Trans-Canada Highway is back open west of Revelstoke after flooding has caused it to close for more than a full day.
DriveBC says to expect “heavy delays due to congestion” between Sicamous and Revelstoke.
Flooding was first reported at Three Valley Gap at about 6 a.m. yesterday, after heavy rainfall in recent days.
The ensuing closure has created havoc for commuters, with many people and commercial vehicles detouring via Highway 23 and Highway 6, which requires two inland ferries across the Upper Arrow Lake.
DriveBC had reported hours-long waits for those ferries. It also closed Highway 1 from Revelstoke eastbound to Golden, reportedly to avoid further delays and pressures on the detour route. That closure was first reported after 9 p.m. and as of 9:30 a.m. today, it is fully back open.
In Revelstoke, reports indicate local hotels and motels were completely booked last night, with commuters stuck because of the highway closure. There were also reports of hundreds of people parked at the highway truck stop in town.
Revelstoke city councillor Cody Younker says Ministry of Transportation staff did a shopping trip in town to deliver supplies to people parked at Shelter Bay, along Highway 23, and the ferries reportedly ran through the night.
