There were 129 building permits issues in Kamloops last month worth almost $70 million.
Speaking on The Jeff Andreas Show, Building and Engineering Development Manager Jason Dixon says from a construction value point of view June was a strong month which was driven by two major projects including a $14 million permit for work at the Canada Games pool.
“The other was a $45.6 million permit that went out for the Royal Inland Hospital Patient Care Tower and that was for the interior… from the lower parking level up to level 3.”
“We always knew that the Patient Care Tower would be a really big series of permits this year. We always said we were likely to set a record, but that project in and of itself would likely skew the numbers.”
Looking ahead, Dixon expects the next few months to continue to see string construction values. “But as I forecast through sort of what we still have going, or what we still have in process, some applications that are underway, I am kind of wondering even as we get to the end of the year even if we take the value of that patient Care Tower out, it might still be a pretty strong year in comparison to some of the other ones, maybe not a record, but still string construction values for sure.”
“We do have one more really big permit for the Patient Care Tower. It’s kind of the last permit that will be for the building itself. I expect that to be finished processed and issued in the next month or two. We just finished processing the permit for the Valleyview Secondary School so I expect that to be picked up and show up in the stats for July. That’s a big project. The Hive project that we’re all familiar with downtown, they’ve made an application so that one will be processed in not too long. They’ve got their earth works permit now, so they’re starting on that but the building itself will coming shortly. So those three alone are big projects in and of themselves.”
Year-to-date, the city has issued more than $178 million worth of building permits which is about $30 million more than the first six months of 2019.
