It is an extra layer of protection against COVID-19 for bus drivers in Kamloops while they are on the job.
BC Transit will be retrofitting 633 buses in the Tournament Capital and other communities with full driver doors. In all 34 transit systems will be getting the upgrades, with Transit saying these protective doors are a movable barrier that will be near the fare box on the right side of the driver’s seat.
“It will include a transparent piece of laminated tempered glass with anti-glare coating and metal base,” BC Transit said in a news release.
Work in Kamloops will get underway tomorrow and its expected to take two weeks, however, passengers are unlikely to experience any impacts in service levels.
The existing vinyl barriers that were installed because of the COVID-19 pandemic are being replaced, however the panels will remain in handyDART and community buses.
BC Transit notes all future new buses in the fleet will arrive with the door pre-installed.
