The family of Glen Warner – the 71-year-old Kamloops security guard who was sucker punched in Riverside Park last Thursday – are not happy that the suspect has been released from custody.
Glen’s son Jason Warner, says the family weren’t notified until after 33-year-old Matthew Santoro was released.
“We’re also really concerned about the community because he has been bothering the community of Kamloops for a few months up there because we’ve had various tips sent to us that people have reported him often, and now he’s just going to go out and continue to do these things,” Warner told NL News. “I’m sure that this isn’t turning his life around.”
“We’re not pleased with the decision because we weren’t notified or involved in any of the processes. So we had no input or victim impact statements or anything.”
Santoro, a Surrey man, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with assault causing bodily harm. He has a court date in Kamloops in August.
“We’ve asked if we can be involved and to do a victim impact statement,” Warner said. “We’ve also inquired a few different things with them and I think we are just really disappointed in the court system that they haven’t included us at all.”
Speaking to media at Riverside Park on Wednesday, Glen Warner says he plans to be back at work as soon as possible. He notes that he is not angry at his assailant, and hopes he gets the help he needs.
NL News has reached out to BC Crown Counsel for comment and is waiting for an update.
