Its about to get very hot in Kamloops.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Southern Interior for what it says will be the ‘first heat of the season’ starting on Monday, July 27.
It says starting this weekend, a strong ridge of high pressure will lead to seasonably hot conditions in the area.
“Temperatures will begin to climb this weekend; by Monday afternoon, daytime highs will soar to the mid to upper 30s,” says the weather service. “The hot air is expected to stick around until Tuesday or Wednesday.”
Overnight lows are expected to be in the mid-teens, which Environment Canada will provide little relief from the heat, noting there may be heat warnings issued in some communities.
The warnings are issued when temperatures are expected to be at least 35 C for two consecutive days, while overnight minimum temperatures of 18 C or higher. Currently, the forecast is calling for temperatures of 36 C Monday though Wednesday, with overnight lows around 18 C from Sunday through to Wednesday night.
“By Wednesday, temperatures will begin to moderate as the ridge of high pressure breaks down,” added the statement.
People are being reminded to stay cool and hydrated, especially between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.. They’re also being urged to limit outdoor activity and to dress for the weather. There’s also a reminder to never leave children or pets alone in a parked car.
As temperatures rise, the BC Wildfire Service is also reinstating fire bans across the Kamloops Fire Centre, effective noon on Wednesday, July 29
