A Kamloops train conductor is pleading with people to speak to their kids, family, and friends about train safety after a near-miss at Pioneer Park on Tuesday.
Chris Parkins, who is also the President of Teamsters 855 Division, says its after there were three separate groups of people who tried to cross over and under his train near the park.
“Today, I almost killed another four kids trying to get to Pioneer park, two were too close to handle,” he wrote on facebook. “I can only see one side from where I am at so who knows how may attempts were made [to cross] on the other side. Clearly common sense didn’t exist.”
Parkins says there is no reason why anyone should try and cross the tracks except at a designated crossing, unless there is a train sitting there.
“We cannot feel a bump or your screams, we just find those unfortunately injured or their remains,” he added. “I have hit and killed people, I have had some extremely close calls, I have come so close to killing other people completely oblivious to their surroundings. I have cleaned up the mess of others who just experienced the same.”
“I’ve even seen the gruesome injuries and unfortunate demise of my own brothers at work from trains and equipment. Trains are not a joke. I have seen more in my 13 years on the railway than any person should.”
He says he is hoping to save some lives by reminding people there is no need to be around the tracks and no need to cross through or under a train.
“We know trains will cause you some delay at some point, but be patient, they will clear the appropriate crossings when they can,” Parkins said.
“Yes, we know you are out and about going to your favorite beach, walking the dog, trying to get to that trail on your bike, or just thinking its a great place to take pictures, but please stay off the tracks.”
