Nine new COVID-19 cases in the Interior Health Authority since yesterday’s update for a total of 369 since the pandemic began.
Its part of 50 new cases province-wide, five of which were epi-linked cases, for a total of 3,641 cases in British Columbia. There was also one new death, at Holy Family Hospital in Vancouver, bringing B.C.’s total death toll to 195.
There are no people in hospital across Interior Health. Across B.C., five people are in hospital, with two in intensive care.
There were no new community outbreaks, but there was one health-care facility outbreak at Dania Home in the Fraser Health region, taking the number of outbreaks at long-term care facilities to two and acute-care facilities to one.
Interior Health officials also say there are now 137 cases linked to Kelowna since June 26, an increase of seven since yesterday. About 60 per cent of Kelowna-linked cases are considered recovered.
Active Kelowna cases remain fluid as new cases continue to be linked to the city while others recover.
“July long weekend was a reminder that COVID-19 is still in our communities and can spread quickly if we are not respecting public health guidance, especially around gatherings,” Interior Health medical health officer Dr. Silvina Mema said, in a statement.
“The increases in Kelowna started with a relatively small number of positive cases. The spread from these gatherings shows just how important it is to keep to Dr. Bonnie Henry’s recommendation of fewer faces, bigger spaces.”
Like Dr. Henry, she is asking people to avoid large gatherings, and to instead keep your gatherings small with people in your bubble.
“By following public health guidance for gatherings, practices social distancing and the other recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, then we can have a safe August in Interior Health,” Mema added.
“We all need to work together to make that possible – starting this long weekend and in the weeks ahead.”
As well, the province also released a ‘good times guide ‘ which health officials say is B.C.’s ‘playbook for how to have fun and to keep each other safe and healthy.’
“We all want to keep COVID-19 low and slow, and your actions make the difference,” a statement from the ministry said. “Throughout B.C., people are doing what it takes to keep our firewall strong, and we thank you for what you are doing today, tomorrow and every day this summer.”
