The partner of a man who died after being stabbed in Kamloops this past Saturday is hoping to raise money to bring his body back to Newfoundland.
Paul Samuel Whitten, 39, was stabbed in a Clarke St. house and later died in hospital. A 37-year-old man Jason Holm is in custody and he has been charged with second degree murder.
“One of my worst nightmares has come true. Yesterday, I had to tell my five beautiful babies that their daddy is gone to heaven,” Megan Parsons, wrote in a GoFundMe post. “My heart is truly broken, and I have no idea where to start. I’m [trying] to see if I can try to raise enough money to get their daddy home from B.C to Newfoundland.”
Whitten had moved to Kamloops about a year ago to seek out work. Parsons says he leaves behind seven children as well as family and friends.
“Having to tell your children that they will never be able to see their daddy again is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” she added. “Paul was taken from us Saturday morning in a very horrific way.”
B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating as it says Kamloops RCMP were contacted by someone concerned about Holm’s mental health on July 31. The IIO is looking at the RCMP’s lack of success in finding Holm the day before the August 1 stabbing.
Parson’s GoFundMe has a goal of $20,000. As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, it had raised $1,950.
