A pretty calm weekend in the Kamloops Fire Centre according to the BC Wildfire Service.
Fire Information Officer Madison Smith says there are currently nine fires burning, all of which are under control at this time.
“We’ve had 112 fires up until today, with a total of 223 hectares burnt,” she said. “Last year in 2019 at this time, we had a 123 fires up to date for a total of 3,516 hectares burnt.”
Smith adds the fire danger rating for most of the Kamloops Fire Centre is low to moderate at this time because of cooler and wetter weather over the past few days.
“There’s patches of high near Merritt and west of Lillooet, so I just want to remind folks to remain diligent and if you are lighting up a camp fire just make sure that it is fully extinguished before leaving the area,” Smith said.
Fire bans were reinstated across the Kamloops Fire Centre two weeks ago on July 29, and its expected to be in effect until October 15.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, there were 32 fires in the province in the past 32 days, two of which ignited in the last two days. There are 26 active fires in the province right now, half of which were started by lightning.
And across B.C., there have been 369 fires as of August 9, that had burned a total of 828 hectares this fire season.
