Despite it being the middle of summer, some drivers in Kamloops were reporting ‘winter driving conditions’ in one spot in town at around noon today.
It was because of an oil spill on Shuswap Road near the intersection with Highway 5.
Kamloops Fire Rescue Captain Dan Funk says oil spilled onto part of the westbound lanes on Shuswap Road and made conditions slick.
“We blocked traffic. We used AbsorbAll to cover up as much as we could of the oil spill, then we got a hold of Robert Griffith from the Kamloops Indian Band, an Environmental Specialist,” he said. “We had asked him to get a hold of the resources from KIB to cover the rest of the spill.”
Funk says no one was hurt after this afternoon’s incident, noting that at least one vehicle slipped going down the road before crews were called.
“[After specialists from Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc] took over, Engine 3 went to the van to make sure that the occupants were safe and uninjured. Then we escorted the occupant to River St, so we didn’t have to block the rest of the Route 5,” Funk added.
He says it’s also not clear where the oil came from or exactly how much was spilled.
“There was a few litres in a couple of different spots possible when the vehicle was waiting for the light to turn,” Funk said. “We took care of that with AbsorbAll.”
