Police now say two people were killed in last night’s crash on the Trans-Canada Highway just west of Savona.
The crash happened just after 5 p.m. near the intersection of Deadman-Vidette Road.
Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey with the Southeast District RCMP says a westbound Ford Fiesta crossed the centre line of the highway and hit an eastbound Dodge Journey head on.
The Fiesta driver died at the scene; he was an 84-year-old man from the Kamloops area. He was the only person inside that vehicle.
The passenger of the Journey also died, after being rushed to hospital. That person was a 77-year-old woman from the Kamloops area. The driver of that vehicle, an 83-year-old, is in hospital in “serious condition” according to police.
Further details of why the crash might have happened are not clear, and RCMP Central Interior Traffic Services (CITS) is now investigating. Anyone with information or possibly dashcam footage of the crash is asked to call CITS at 250-828-3111.
Highway 1 was closed for more than five hours between Savona and Cache Creek because of the crash.
This was the second fatal crash yesterday in the southern Interior on Highway 1. One person was also killed in a crash between a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck just west of Revelstoke, at 4:40 a.m. yesterday.
