While Lytton set a temperature record yesterday, Kamloops came close, according to data from Environment Canada.
Meteorologist Carmen Hartt tells NL News says it was the third hottest August 16 on record in the Tournament Capital.
“The record was actually set in 2008, and that was the same year that Lytton had their previous record, so it must have been a very hot stretch back then,” she said.
“The record for Kamloops was 38.6 C and yesterday we got to 37.9 C. It was just about a half a degree off the record in Kamloops. It was certainly a very warm day.”
Hartt says Lytton was Canada’s hot spot yesterday at 41.2 degrees, almost a degree hotter than the old record of 40.4 C. The Cache Creek area also set a new record at 39.8 C, beating the old record of 38.9 C set in 1967.
Merritt meanwhile tied its record for August 16 with temperatures reaching 38 C, similar to 2003.
In B.C., records were also broken in Cranbrook, Creston, Estevan Point, Hope Slide, Pitt Meadows, Penticton, Squamish, Summerland, West Vancouver, and White Rock.
Heat warnings remain in place for Kamloops as well as the Fraser Canyon, the Okanagan, North and South Thompson, Cariboo and 100 Mile regions. Temperatures are expected to stay in the mid-30 for at least the next few days.
