Kamloops RCMP found a bag filled with dynamite last week in the South Thompson River and were able to safely detonate it.
Staff Sergeant Sascha Fesenko says the RCMP Dive Team found the explosives near the Lafarge Bridge on Thursday.
It had been found by a fisherman who reeled it in, and put it back in the water before calling police.
Fesenko says there was a safety concern.
“Absolutely, by pulling it out. My understanding is the individual who did locate the items had some experience with those items. And that’s why he was able to handle them the way he did and place them the way he did, knowing that would be the safest place for them to be.”
Several residents reported to NL News that they heard a loud explosion go off on Thursday afternoon at the bomb disposal unit, near Mission Flats Road.
He says police are still investigating, and trying to find who put the explosives in the river in the first place.
