A cannabis production plant being built in Logan Lake could eventually grow medical-grade vegetables as well.
Logan Lake CAO Randy Lambright says it’s his understanding that MedFlora would not need extra approval from Health Canada.
“Whether or not that goes ahead, I think that’s a business decision which will be made by MedFlora themselves. But when we were originally corking them to come to Logan Lake, or at least settle in Logan Lake, that was one of the things that they had talked about. Was a fairly substantial large greenhouse operation to raise vegetables for pharmaceutical purposes as well.
“With regards to the nutraceuticals, which I guess is the proper term… I believe they would then just become a greenhouse operation and would just be raising vegetables.”
MedFlora has broken ground one phase one of its cannabis plant, which will be more than 15,000 square feet in size. Lambright says that should be up-and-running by next spring.
Phase two will be about 35,000 square feet in size once built.
“They had originally, and still plan to, at least for the first and second phases, to have medicinal cannabis. And then ultimately, one of the things they are looking at once they get past phase two, is to look at pharmaceuticals relative to vegetables, and what have you,” Lambright says.
MedFlora first said it hopes to employ about 100 people at its facility in Logan Lake when finished.
