About two dozen people in downtown Kamloops have been evacuated after a gas line was hit in the alley between Seymour and St Paul streets.
Kamloops Fire Acting Platoon Captain Ken Hartt says the gas line behind 444 St. Paul Street was hit by a construction crew around 10:00 this morning.
“We’ve evacuated from 430 eastward towards Fifth Avenue on both St. Paul and Seymour Street, so all occupants on those streets are not in the building at this time,” he told NL News. “Just office buildings so right around 25 people, if that.”
“The fire department is on scene just monitoring for any ignition sources and FortisBC is repairing the lines.”
In a tweet, FortisBC says these kinds of preventable incidents can be avoided by contacting BC 1 Call before doing any kind of digging.
Hartt adds there is no immediate risk to people in the area, and he expects repairs to be completed in a couple of hours.
Our crews are onsite assessing the damage to a natural gas line caused by a third party in #KamloopsBC today. These preventable incidents can be avoided by contacting @BC1Call before digging. #digsafe
