The BC Wildfire Service is ending restrictions on burning in the Kamloops Fire Centre as of noon this week, about two weeks earlier than planned.
It means people will once again be able to use burn barrels, launch sky lanterns, and set off fireworks though there may still be restrictions that were put in by municipalities.
“With recent and forecast weather conditions that include cooler temperatures, higher humidity and substantial precipitation, the fire danger rating has dropped to ‘low’ in most of the Kamloops Fire Centre,” said a statement from the BC Wildfire Service.
“People who do open burning should use caution and be aware of local conditions that might impact their ability to burn safely and control their open fires,” the wildfire service says in a statement. “Anyone who lights an open fire must also comply with B.C.’s air quality control legislation.”
As is the case, people who want to have a Category 3 fires – which is any open fire larger than two metres high and three metres wide – will need to get a burn registration number.
The burning restrictions were first put in place in April to prevent large wildfires during the COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions were eased in the middle of June before being reinstated at the end of July.
“The BC Wildfire Service takes several factors into account before rescinding its open burning prohibitions,” added the statement. “This includes balancing the needs of the public with the need to mitigate the risk of human-caused wildfires.
