Kamloops RCMP had to taser a violent offender who was believed to be armed this morning after a chase that went across a large part of town.
Mounties say the suspect was arrested early this morning after police followed him from downtown to the Tranquille corridor. The 24-year-old had previously fled police from Monashee Court in Sahali after an alleged assault on a 25-year-old woman, yesterday evening and again today.
The suspect allegedly drove towards officers and police say they had to avoid his vehicle. He was driving on two rims and resisted arrest after his vehicle stopped moving, and police say he pointed a hatchet at officers during the process.
At that point, police say this man was tasered and promptly arrested. Staff Sgt. Mat Van Laer called it a high-risk incident, and noted it was a ‘chaotic scene’ this morning.
“This was definitely a high risk incident, involving a dangerous and violent offender who had no regards for public or police safety what‐so‐ever,” he said. “In addition to the serious assault to the victim, we also had information that this individual could be carrying a firearm.”
“We did everything we could to make every attempts at stopping this individual with the least possible risks to public, including the successful use of a spike belt. I am very thankful that none of them were seriously hurt.”
The suspect is expected to face charges of assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault, forcible confinement, uttering threats, breach of probation, as well as other charges related to the police chase.
Anyone with more information on the incidents is being asked to call police.
