As we head into the home stretch of the provincial election campaign, the Green candidate for Kamloops North Thompson is making his pitch.
Thomas Martin is a forestry worker and says he’s also a former Liberal supporter.
While on the NL Morning News, he was asked what attracted him to the BC Greens. “It’s about people, it’s not about the party. You’re looking at who do you want to represent you as a person, who is actually in a position to stand up for their community and actually go against what their party is telling them to do.”
“I don’t see that from the NDP or the Liberals, they have to tow the party line. Me as a Green candidate, I can go against what our party is saying if I have a reason that I feel strongly about.”
As far as how the Greens are being received in the riding which has been a Liberal stronghold, “Overall I think it’s been well received. I am a forestry worker, I’m a former Liberal voter and I switched over to the Greens because I saw the devastation that’s happened in my industry in terms of job numbers.”
“We actually have a very good platform that’s targeted directly to rural communities and specifically to resource communities. We’re trying to get money back into these communities, trying to get economic development back into these communities and try and get control of the resources back into the communities instead of in Victoria and Vancouver.”
As far what the Greens would do that they didn’t get done when they held the balance of power in the last government. “I think one of the big things we can do this time around is we’re looking at direct resource revenue sharing with municipalities.”
Martin also stressed he thinks the Greens needs more representation in the Interior.
