Two Kamloops Blazers are about to go camping for four weeks.
Connor Zary is one of 27 forwards while Dylan Garand is one of five goaltenders that Hockey Canada will bring in for a 28-day camp run by head coach Andre Tourigny from Nov. 16 through Dec. 13 in Red Deer.
In all, 47 players have been invited, with camp to feature practices, three intrasquad games, and six games against a team of U SPORTS all-stars.
When it comes to COVID-19 testing at camp, players and staff will be tested three days before heading to Red Deer. At camp meanwhile, testing will be every three to four days.
Both Zary and Garand were drafted earlier this month – Zary in the first round (24th overall) to the Calgary Flames while Garand was a fourth round selection (103rd overall) to the New York Rangers.
Garand is the highest drafted of the five goalies heading to camp, and with plenty of Hockey Canada experience at the U-17 and U-18 levels, he is expected to make the team, but he’s not taking anything for granted.
“No, not at all. Same with everyone you all have to earn it. It’s a little different without anyone being in league play. I think a big aspect is I plan on trying to be consistent and performing everyday,” he told NL Sports.
Zary too is expected to be on the team after he cut from the 2020 team after being invited to camp as an injury replacement last December.
With no NHL games playing at the time because of COVID-19, it is shaping up to be a formidable Team Canada roster even though 2020 first overall pick Alexis Lafreniere is not on the list of camp invitees.
Final rosters will be expanded to 22 skaters and three goaltenders instead of the usual 20 skaters and three goaltenders.
The 2021 World Juniors will be held as a bubbled event in Edmonton beginning on Christmas Day. Canada’s first game will be on Boxing Day against Germany.
