Two Kamloops parents have been charged after abducting their child from a social worker yesterday, according to police.
Kamloops RCMP Sergeant Darren Michels says the child’s parents broke into a home around 2 p.m. on Nov. 2, and assaulted a social worker while nabbing their child.
Michels says the parents were stopped in Merritt and taken into custody but the child wasn’t in the car. Police later found out that the child was with his grandfather who was driving down the Coquihalla towards Hope in another vehicle.
“Contact was subsequently made with the grandfather by phone and he agreed to present the child at the Hope RCMP Detachment. The grandfather arrived with the child a short time later and was met by police,” he said. “The child was in good spirits and was returned to the caregivers.”
“We are very happy that we were able to bring this to a peaceful conclusion and that the child is safe. We had initiated the process to issue an Amber Alert however the situation quickly unfolded and the child was located safe”
The child’s 38-year-old father and 37-year-old mother have a court appearance in Kamloops today.
