Starting next year, Kamloops Fire Rescue will have a new policy for doing fire inspections.
Chief Mike Adams says KFR will have a risk-based inspection mandate.
Before this, it would inspect properties each year, and Adams says this new policy will be a better use of resources.
“And that aligns itself with the changes that are anticipated coming out in the revised Fire Services Act from the provincial government. And it also is aligned with best practices. So that would be very simple; if you had a building, structure or a business that was classified as a high risk, we would be inspecting it more frequently.”
The policy includes all types of buildings except for existing single-family homes. Those will be inspected by KFR upon request by the building’s occupants. Brand new homes are inspected for fire safety by KFR before an occupancy permit is issued.
