The BC Trucking Association is hoping improvements can be made at Larson Hill on the Coquihalla that benefit truckers.
Last winter, out of three extended closures on the Coquihalla caused by semi-trucks, two were at Larson Hill south of Merritt. And there’s already been one there this winter.
President Dave Earle says that section is as challenging as any part of the freeway.
“It is. And that’s something when you think about what can we do next, where’s our next piece. We seemed to have been able to address Box Canyon, and the Snowshed Hill if you will, in terms of making sure there are facilities, equipment and signage appropriate for that,” Earle says.
“This is the next discussion, the next iteration. It’s the process of continuous improvement and saying how can you do better. What can we do more, what facilities need to be in place. And let’s make sure we have them, because we just want to see everything move safely – is the absolute primary goal for what we do.”
There are four chain-up areas with flashing signs on the Coquihalla, but none in either direction at Larson Hill.
The chain-up areas are at Sowaqua Creek, Box Canyon and Clapperton heading northbound, and Zopkios heading southbound.
