Two players at Team Canada’s World Juniors training camp in Red Deer have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Hockey Canada.
In a statement, Hockey Canada vice president of national teams Scott Salmond did not name the players who tested positive, but says are quarantining in their hotels.
According to NL’s Jon Keen, neither of the two Kamloops Blazers players at camp are affected. Forward Connor Zary and goalie Dylan Garand are both taking part.
Salmond says this morning’s scrimmage has been cancelled as a result of the positive tests and other activities are also suspended today.
He says all players and team staff were tested when they arrived at camp on Nov. 14, and have been tested regularly since. He says all members will be tested again before camp activities resume. Camp is scheduled to last until Dec. 7.
Team Canada coaches were expected to cut 12-18 players tonight, and it’s not clear if that will still go ahead.
Alberta has seen more than 3,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the past two days, and the provincial health officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw and Premier Jason Kenney are expected to announce tighter restrictions during a news conference at 4:30 p.m. local time.
