Fifty and thriving: the District of Logan Lake has reached a milestone birthday this month.
Mayor Robin Smith says the community was incorporated on Nov. 10, 1970. Since then the community has grown to a population of about 2,000 people.
Smith says the community was built for workers from the newly-built copper mine to live with their families, which remains the District’s largest employer.
“It was very, very well planned out at the time, and the whole planning was all around attracting young families. Lots of parks, lots of green spaces and all that. But we’ve continued to work with the mine over the years.”
And 50 years later, she says the community has continued to grow alongside the mine.
“There’s a lot of good initiatives that we’ve got on our radar right now. Including things like improved internet service and broadband, and all of those things that make it more comfortable for people to be working from home, which makes us much more viable as a community for the long term.”
Smith says she hopes celebrations for the milestone birthday will happen next year, saying they have been delayed because of COVID-19.
“It’s definitely still going to be on our radar to do some community events. Hopefully in 2021 depending how everything goes.”
