Environment Canada says there a good chance now that you’ll be waking up to a White Christmas in Kamloops this year, after a major snow storm across Southern B.C. on Monday.
Meteorologist Doug Lundquist says it could even be a Perfect Christmas because daytime highs over the next few days should be at or near normal between 0 C and -2 C.
“I look at computer models from all over the world and almost every one of them says that at about 1 in the morning on Boxing Day we’ll start to get snow again,” he said on the NL Noon Report.
“But what I notice about those models is that they tend to under forecast the start time and it usually comes six hours earlier, so maybe just Christmas Day evening, we could not only have a white ground but snow falling from the ground too.”
According to Environment Canada, a perfect Christmas means there is already snow on the ground and then at some point on Christmas Day there is measurable snowfall. As it stands, the forecast on Friday is calling for snow which then turns to a 70 per cent chance of flurries on Boxing Day Saturday.
“I think this year we deserve to have a beautiful white Christmas. Its going to be nice actually,” Lundquist added. “Thankfully the roads once they get them cleaned up, the dryness leading up to Christmas Day is a bonus and then the fact that its not going to snow till Christmas Day night and on Boxing Day, I think this is perfect.”
Over the course of Monday’s snow storm, Lundquist says the Kamloops area got about 12 cm of snow at the airport, while the Coquihalla Summit saw 51 cm of snow. There was 62 cm of snow that fell at Larson Hill, and 31 cm at Helmer Lake.
It was a similar situation on the Okanagan Connector between Merritt and Kelowna with 48 cm of snow at the Pennask Summit, while the Allison Pass on Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton saw 55 cm of snow.
“Here by the lake in Kelowna, the big wide lake, and its still warm, managed to melt a lot of it. I got 5 cm,” he said. “Its good news for everybody, I don’t see anywhere in the Southern Interior that I’m worrying about the valley bottom not having a White Christmas this year.”
“We really lucked out this week, if you like snow.”
