UPDATED:
RCMP drug-lab teams have been called in to investigate a moving van left abandoned at a Cache Creek motel.
Southeast District RCMP spokesperson, Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, says the van was impounded on Tuesday from a local motel. He did not say exactly where it was, but a close source has confirmed to NL News that the vehicle was at a Cache Creek motel.
O’Donaghey says after the van was searched by Ashcroft RCMP, the federal RCMP Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response Team, known as CLEAR, was called in from its home base in Surrey.
“The items inside this rental truck… were cause enough for concern to consult and call in the CLEAR team. So they are in the Ashcroft area with their HAZMAT team, assessing this vehicle to determine exactly what’s inside and exactly what our next steps are going to be,” O’Donaghey told NL News.
He says it’s unclear right now who may have been in possession of the moving van.
“I was given the impression that this vehicle was left abandoned outside the motel for a number of days before it was eventually removed by a tow company.”
O’Donaghey is asking the public to avoid the area for the time being.
“I don’t have the specific location available to me at this time, but more importantly I don’t want to unnecessarily send members of the public to that specific location… The people who live in that area will know what we’re talking about. And we’re asking them just to stay away for the time being, and allow us to do their work there.”
Members of the public who may have more information to call Ashcroft RCMP, at 250-453-2216.
