The Premier is offering his condolences to the family of a Kamloops miner killed on the job earlier this week.
Thirty-five-year-old Ray Rosenberg died early Tuesday morning, after a mud rush in an underground area of the New Afton Mine.
John Horgan says an investigation is underway.
“No one should go to work and not come home. And I know the family is just grieving desperately, and I want to offer my condolences to the family and all of the people in the community. We’ll grieve and mourn this and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
In a news release sent out to shareholders this morning, New Gold says above-ground work at the mine has restarted as of Thursday afternoon and will ramp up over the next few days. That includes ore processing and tailing operations.
Underground operations remain suspended. Tuesday’s fatal accident happened underneath the Lift 1 cave, and New Gold says work will remain on pause there until a full investigation is done. The company indicates work will restart sooner in other underground areas that were not impacted by the mud rush.
A GoFundMe was started on Wednesday by Rosenberg’s sister-in-law, Tasha Gruber, as a way to support his spouse and four children going forward. At time of posting, people had donated $87,317 to the fundraiser.
