Underground work at the New Afton mine near Kamloops resumed over the weekend after a mud rush that killed one contractor and injured two other New Gold employees.
“The restarting of mining activities is a significant step for the New Afton mine as we continue our safe and sequential return to full operations,” said New Gold president and CEO, Renaud Adams, in a statement released today.
“As we move forward, our primary focus remains on the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors and their families and we will continue to provide counselling and support for them.”
Ray Rosenberg, a father of four, was killed early on Tuesday morning and his body was recovered almost 40 hours later.
Adams says the area of the mine where the mud rush occurred is closed until further notice. An investigation is still underway though Kamloops RCMP say there is no criminality expected.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe organized by Rosenberg’s sister-in-law, Tasha Gruber, had raised almost $115,000 as of this morning, nearly five times the $25,000 goal.
