Housing Minister Dave Eby says he’d welcome meeting Kamloops council to do a review of transitional housing projects.
As of last week, Eby says he didn’t know all the details what Kamloops would be asking, but he says it’s typical for BC Housing to review housing projects, and their impacts, one year after opening.
“It’s for the purposes of accountability of the service provider, usually a non-profit organization, and also to assure residents in the area that BC Housing doesn’t just open these housing facilities and abandon the scene. So they continue to monitor and to ensure that places are operating appropriately, and that people are being good neighbours and so on,” Eby told NL News.
“I’m open to any discussion with Kamloops about that kind of review. There are two types of reviews happening across the province right now; one is reviews of how the supports are working and how they integrate with the local health authority, police, and other services. The other is a review that relates to needs in the community, and whether or not the existing services are meeting the needs. Whether it’s either of those conversations or both, I’m happy to have that conversation with Kamloops.”
Kamloops council wants to meet with Eby, Health Minister Adrian Dix and Mental Health and Addictions Minister Sheila Malcolmson to review outcomes at transitional housing.
Council also wants to review the outcomes of people who have accessed those housing units.
