As a multi-million-dollar construction project continues on Tranquille Road, the city has added a temporary four-way stop sign on the detour route in Brocklehurst.
Starting tomorrow, the intersection of 12th Street and Lethbridge Avenue will be a four-way stop, instead of a two-way stop with thru traffic on 12th.
Many local residents have been asking for this change since 12th Street became a detour route a month ago, between Tranquille and Parkcrest Avenue. The city calls this change a safety measure, and asks people to follow speed limits that are posted.
Meanwhile, the city is also asking drivers to respect detours in place around the Tranquille construction zone, which goes from just west of 12th to Singh Street.
Capital projects manager Darren Crundwell says many drivers are skipping through quiet residential streets.
“Fortunately, and unfortunately, there’s a lot of ways around any of the detours we put up. Obviously with the grid-style road network through there, you can get around anything. Really the traffic is shifting and we hope everybody would follow the detours but that’s not the case.”
Crundwell also is asking drivers not to drive through the construction site on Tranquille Road if they do not live there, something he says has been a problem after-hours.
Road work will be going on until the fall, to replace underground utilities. The project started last spring and paused before winter, and stretches from Southill Street to 12th. It’s budgeted at $11 million.
A temporary all-way stop has been installed at the intersection of 12th St & Lethbridge Ave as a safety measure, effective April 6.
