With a cluster of COVID-19 cases in Sun Peaks, the Superintendent of the Kamloops-Thompson School District says they’re monitoring the situation in the resort municipality.
“I have been in contact with the medical health officer. He has advised me that there has been no impact on the school at this point,” Terry Sullivan said, during Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting.
“As far as the elementary school is concerned, we will continue to monitor that situation very closely and if we need to, we will respond in another way, we are prepared to do so.”
Over the past two weeks, Sullivan says there has been a steady level of COVID-19 exposures in schools across the district with kids now back in class after Spring Break. He notes given how things played out after Christmas break, he is anticipating school exposures to increase in the near future.
“I’ve been keeping the board informed as well as parents throughout the district through a weekly letter and I will be sending out another one – parents can expect another letter, staff can expect another letter from me this week,” he said.
Back in February, Sullivan said there were 42 COVID-19 exposures in 28 school days after the winter break compared to just five exposures in 69 school days before the winter break.
According to Interior Health’s active school exposure list there are three SD73 schools with an active exposure – Westsyde Secondary, Valleyview Secondary, and Arthur Stevenson – with all of those exposures happening on April 1.
