A Shuswap man is okay after being attacked by a grizzly bear on his own property.
Conservation officer Tanner Beck tells NL News the attack happened on Wednesday afternoon, outside of the man’s home in Malakwa.
He says the man was on a walk with his two dogs before it happened.
“One of his dogs ran into the bush, he heard a commotion, and out of the bush came what he identified as a grizzly bear. It then charged him, he ended up on the ground kicking at it and it bit him in the legs, so he sustained two bites. And the dogs were uninjured. And then the grizzly bear ended up taking off after the dog broke it off.”
“Looking at the whole situation, it was determined it was likely a defensive attack. The dog had gone into the bush and harassed it, provoking the attack.”
Beck says the victim drove himself to hospital and got stitches, and was back home later that night.
He says people should keep their dogs close by and always make noise in the wilderness so that they don’t startle any predators.
