A pro-Palestine protest is set to take place in downtown Kamloops tomorrow afternoon.
The event being organized by the Kamloops Islamic Association aimed at raising awareness of the human rights situation facing Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. It is scheduled to run between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Seymour Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.
“We will not tolerate any form of hate speech. We will not tolerate any form of discrimination or violence and that the focus of the protest of course is like I said the human rights of the Palestinian people,” Umme Mansoory, a director of the Kamloops Islamic Association said on the NL Noon Report. “The focus is of course criticism of a government, which is the government of Israel.”
“We are not criticizing the people of Israel. We are not criticizing people who practice the Jewish faith. That needs to be separated from our criticism of war crimes that we are seeing in Palestine right now. We are advocating for Palestinians human rights. Basic human rights.”
People who attend the protest are being asked to follow all of the COVID-19 guidelines including staying away from crowds and people not in their household. They’re also being told to wear a mask and to sanitize their hands.
They’re also being told not to share items or pass them back and forth, including phones, signs, placards, brochures, flyers, banners, water bottles, food, and masks.
Mansoory says the Kamloops Islamic Association has consulted with the RCMP on the logistics of the event.
“They have been very cooperative and so we thank the RCMP for that,” she added.
