Heading into the May long weekend, B.C. health officials are reporting 420 new COVID-19 cases today as well as six more deaths.
Active cases are at 4,507 with 319 people currently in hospital, 107 in intensive care. All three of those figures are down from yesterday’s update.
There were 58 new cases in Interior Health, with 240 in Fraser Health, 84 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 31 in Northern Health, and seven on Vancouver Island.
Six more people have died of COVID-19 in B.C., taking the death toll to 1,667 people.
On the vaccine front, there have now been 2,744,020 doses administered to adults 18 and over in B.C., 142,406 of which were second doses. People 12 and older are eligible to register for a vaccine appointment across the province.
“This long weekend is the time to stick with all of the public health orders and travel restrictions – staying small, staying local and getting registered for your vaccine if you have not already done so,” a statement from Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry said. “We need to keep pushing COVID-19 down to be able to safely turn the dial on the current restrictions.”
“The only way we can do that is to keep using our safety layers and getting more and more people immunized.”
Like his provincial counterparts, the top doctor in Interior Health is asking people to follow the COVID-19 restrictions this weekend.
The B.C. government will be releasing the details of its Restart Plan on Tuesday allowing people to start planning for the summer and the months ahead.
“We’ll be taking a gradual approach to our restart, monitoring our progress as we go to ensure cases, outbreaks and hospitalizations don’t start to creep up,” Henry added. “And, we need everyone to also do their part – this long weekend and in the weeks ahead. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.”
There are now 135,068 people who have recovered from COVID-19, about 95 per cent of the 141,373 cases in British Columbia.
