The B.C. Government says it will be installing centre median barriers and widening the Coquihalla highway shoulder, about 55 kilometres south of Merritt.
It says a $2.2-million contract has been awarded to Jakes Construction Ltd. for the Highway 5 Mine Creek Curves project. It covers a section of the Coquihalla that has been the site of some cross-over crashes.
As part of this work, crews will install four kilometres of centre median barrier which the government says will reduce the potential for some accidents.
“These safety enhancements will make this section of the Coquihalla safer and more reliable for everyone who travels the highway, including commercial truck drivers carrying goods,” the government said, in a statement.
Work is expected to start later this month and be completed this fall. Drivers can expect to see minor delays while work is ongoing.
“Drivers are reminded to obey construction zone speed limits and follow the direction of traffic-control personnel,” the statement added.
