With hundreds of properties in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District on evacuation order, Tourism Kamloops is trying to collect donations for evacuees.
“With the current wildfires happening in the surrounding area, evacuees have had to leave quickly without essential items and their belongings,” Tourism Kamloops said.
People can make donations at a mobile trailer that is set up at The Concession at Riverside Park today and tomorrow from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Specifically, Tourism Kamloops says it is looking for the following:
- Non-perishable food items
- Water
- Towels, bedding etc.
- Pet food
- Toiletries (toothbrush and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, brushes and combs, razors, lotion, body wash, shampoo, soap, sunscreen etc.)
- Clothing for all members of the family (new or in excellent used condition)
- Footwear
- Baby supplies
- Gift cards for gas, groceries, or other essential items
If you have any questions about the Tourism Kamloops donation drive, you’re asked to contact Curt Appleby at 250-320-9705.
There are also several GoFundMe fundraisers set up to raise money for people impacted by the Lytton Creek wildfire, which decimated the village of Lytton on Wednesday.
People have also been coordinating offers of help with accommodations, animals, and transportation through the BC Wildfire and Flood Support Facebook group and a Facebook group set up by members of the Nlaka’pamux First Nation.
Wildfire evacuees are being urged to register at an emergency social services centre or through the province’s online portal as soon as possible.
The Red Cross has also established a toll-free family reunification phone line at 1-800-863-6582.
