Kamloops council is mulling over the idea of expanding the revitalization tax exemption, which was introduced in early 2020 to incentivize developers to build certain projects in certain areas.
Council has had discussions about including daycares and multi-family rentals as eligible uses.
Kamloops mayor Ken Christian says expanding the boundaries for where these tax exempted developments could occur is being considered as well.
“They’ve come up with an expansion to the downtown exemption area that will include West Victoria all the way to Overlander’s Bridge and will include the area east of 6th Ave all the way out to the Valleyview interchange. So that will really broaden the area where a lot of these projects would be eligible for the tax exemption,” Christian says.
“They’ve also looked at some of the motels that really need redevelopment. And if you’re going to tear one of those down and put up multi-family housing, that will be eligible.”
Christian says the RTE expansion will come back to a regular council meeting in the fall.
