A heads up to drivers as Highway 1 will be closed between Lytton and Spences Bridge at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 17, due to the risk of landslides as a result of heavy rain.
Northbound traffic will be redirected to Highway 5 or Highway 3, while southbound traffic will be diverted at Cache Creek.
“Weather forecasts for Lytton and the surrounding area indicate significant rainfall,” the Ministry of Transportation said, in a statement. “Debris flows are a post-fire hazard that can be triggered by intense rainfall.”
The Ministry says other provincial roads and highways may be affected by landslides especially in areas that have been impacted by the summer’s wildfire season.
“Drivers should expect to encounter debris along any burnt areas and are advised to plan alternative routes, as further closures may happen with limited notice,” the Ministry added.
“Motorists travelling through areas affected by wildfires are asked not to stop during rainfall events for their safety and to ensure firefighting efforts or road-maintenance activities are not impeded.”
Environment Canada says between 50 and 70 millimetres of rain is expected from eastern Vancouver Island to the Fraser Valley and up to Whistler – with potentially higher amounts over Howe Sound and the North Shore mountains.
It warns heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Drivers are being told to turn on their lights if visibility is reduced and to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
There is no word on when the highway could reopen. The Ministry of Transportation says it will be continuously monitoring the situation throughout the day.
