The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) will be investigating Sunday’s fatal crash on Highway 1 and Highland Road that resulted in a man’s death.
In a statement, RCMP say an officer came across the crash between a pick-up truck and a motorcycle in the eastbound lanes of the highway just before 7 p.m., Sept. 26.
“Initial investigation suggests that motorcycle rider ran a red light and struck the front quarter panel of the left turning pick-up [as it turned onto the highway],” RCMP said, in a statement. “[The motorcyclist] was killed and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick-up was not injured.”
The IIO BC meanwhile says just before the crash happened, the driver of the white Suzuki motorcycle passed an officer who driving a marked police van heading east on Highway 1.
Kamloops RCMP are still investigating the cause of the crash, while the IIO is looking into whether police actions or inactions were linked to the man’s death.
“As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police,” the RCMP statement added.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the crash is asked to contact the IIO BC’s witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or via the online contact form.
