New orange banners at city hall are meant to show common bonds between the City of Kamloops and Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc.
Kamloops mayor Ken Christian and Tk’emlúps chief Roseanne Casimir unveiled the banners this afternoon, which have been put up at city hall and will be put up on light posts around the city over the next month.
Casimir says the banner project is “an excellent example of reconciliation in action, and for that we are grateful.” She says the banners reflect “solidary, unity and friendship” between the city and Tk’emlúps.
The unveiling comes a week after National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, something the city says is significant.
“The findings of the missing unmarked graves at residential schools this year, first in Kamloops and now across the country, has started a conversation that we want to engage in and has taught us lessons we want to continue learning,” Christian says. He adds the city and the band are continuing to work behind the scenes on “togetherness” between the two communities.
The new banners at city hall were designed by local artist Lyle Paul.
