The Blue Grotto nightclub in downtown Kamloops is warning of possible spread of COVID-19 after seven people tested positive for the virus following a concert last Thursday.
In a post on Facebook, owner Pup Johnston says three of the 51 people who were at the Belvedere show on Oct. 14, which also featured the bands Blacked Out and Let’s Go, have since tested positive for COVID-19.
Four of 13 band members have also tested positive for the virus while five Blue Grotto staff members are being tested today, Oct. 20.
“Although everyone in the room was confirmed vaccinated at the door we are getting reports of confirmed cases of COVID-19 from that show,” Johnston said. “If you attended Thursday night and are experiencing any symptoms, please self isolate and get tested for COVID-19 as soon as possible.”
“This is not an announcement to be taken lightly. We had 56 vaccinated people in for a four hour show, seated, and mask protocols followed.”
As for the status of the Blue Grotto moving forward, Johnston says they will be reaching out to Interior Health for advice.
“Thanks for your love and support, it was a great show, this is unfortunate, but no one is to blame,” Johnston said. “The most important thing is how we handle it from here.”
In a statement to NL News, Interior Health says there is no outbreak being declared at the Blue Grotto at this time.
“Interior Health does not provide specific details about individual cases – including locations – unless there are broader exposure risks,” the health authority said. “If there is a broader risk to other individuals or the community, Interior Health will issue a public notification,” it says.
“A public exposure is [declared] when a public health investigation indicates that contact tracing has not been able to reach people who may have been exposed to COVID-19.”
Interior Health says anyone at risk of exposure to COVID-19 will be contacted directly by public health contact tracers.
