There were another 17 deaths from COVID-19 in B.C. on the weekend, as the province reported 1,438 new cases in the past three days.
Of those new cases, 321 were in Interior Health. There were also 575 cases in Fraser Health, 221 in Island Health, 166 in Northern Health and 155 in Vancouver Coastal Health.
There are now 407 contagious hospital patients across B.C. who have COVID-19, which is down from 441 on Friday. It’s unclear, though, if that means there are actually fewer COVID-19 patients in hospital; the B.C. government stops counting patients as “contagious” after a certain number of days in hospital, even if they remain in hospital.
Outbreaks of COVID-19 remain active at Royal Inland Hospital and at the Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre.
At RIH, a death was reported on the weekend, as the number of cases grew to 25, including 19 patients and six staff members. Details on the person who died are not clear. The outbreak is specifically in Unit 5 South, which is a general medical unit for adults in the hospital and has not been a ward for COVID patients at any point.
The outbreak at Brocklehurst Gemstone is now up to six cases, including four residents and two staff. That’s up from four total cases as of Friday.
Meanwhile, another 35,135 vaccine doses were administered in the past three days in B.C., including just over 5,000 first doses. With that, now 90.2 per cent of people 12 and older have been vaccinated, while 85.7 per cent are fully vaccinated.
