After well over a foot of a snow fell at the Coquihalla Summit overnight, the worst of the storm will be over later this morning according to forecasters.
In an update at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, Environment Canada said 38 centimetres fell overnight and that another 10 cm was in the forecast this morning.
The southbound lanes of the freeway had to be shut down at about 8:45 p.m. because of accidents in the heavy snow, before opening several hours later. The northbound lanes then were closed for about four hours overnight, reopening just before 5 a.m.
Slightly less snow fell further north of the Coquihalla Summit, with at least 19 cm reported at Larson Hill. About 15 kilometres north of that, at Comstock Road, the highway was bare and dry all night.
Forecasters say snow will taper off before noon and become flurries at the summit. Snow will then return this evening but with only 2-4 cm expected overnight.
