Fifty-three properties south of Merritt near the Coquihalla Highway were evacuated Monday night because of flooding.
The evacuation order impacts all of Brookmere, totalling 51 properties, and two properties further northwest near Larson Hill, at 3120 Coldwater Road and 973 Neilson Street. A map from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District showing both evacuation orders can be found here.
It was barely three months that Brookmere was evacuated because of the Brook Creek wildfire, which merged with the July Mountain wildfire. Properties in Brookmere were evacuated between Aug. 14-31 as a result.
The order is a result of flooding caused by historic rainfall between Saturday and Monday, affecting the Coquihalla Summit and the Coldwater River watershed, among many other regions.
The TNRD has also declared a local state of emergency for Electoral Area “N,” which includes the properties put on evacuation order.
A state of local emergency is also in place in Merritt, as the city has been devastated by floodwaters and the entire population of about 7,000 people has been evacuated.
All main highways that connect the southern Interior to coastal B.C. also remain closed. The Coquihalla north of Hope and the Trans-Canada Highway north of Lytton have seen major washouts which could take weeks to repair, if not longer.
Highway 3 is also closed just east of Princeton and between Princeton and Hope. Highway is closed from just west of Merritt to near Spences Bridge. Highway 99 is also shut down between Lillooet and Pemberton.
