Merritt RCMP say a local man has pleaded guilty after a standoff with the South East District Emergency response team last year.
In a statement, Merritt RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Josh Roda says the incident is from May 27, 2020. He says the ERT was called in to execute a search warrant at a home at 1601 Bann Street after multiple reports of assaults, one involving a firearm.
Five people, including the main suspect, were taken into custody after a short standoff.
“Our search of the residence yielded a Remington 870 shotgun, a compound bow, replica hand guns, a replica machine gun, gun powder, ammunition, body armor, and hard drugs,” Roda said in a statement Tuesday.
Sheldon Quewezance, who lived across the street, told NL News in May 2020 that he saw four people hauled out of the home in handcuffs.
“In the video, you see the police calling for the tenants to come out with their hands up, unarmed,” he said. “I took probably ten minutes before they actually brought them out and it wasn’t just one guy. There was two men that were brought out in handcuffs, and two women.”
On Monday, Dec. 20, Roda says Tyler James Collins pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm, a crossbow, prohibited weapon, prohibited device, ammunition, prohibited ammunition or explosive while prohibited.
He was ordered to spend 285 days in jail, probation for 12 months, a lifetime firearms prohibition and was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of $100.
