Merritt RCMP have created a safe exchange zone outside of their detachment for local residents to use.
In a statement, RCMP say it will be a safe space where people can complete online transactions, as well as a place they can transfer children between parents or guardians.
It is the brainchild of Merritt RCMP Const. Carly Gerein, as part of the RCMP’s Recruit Field Training Program, which requires all new officers to complete a project within the community they serve.
“Const. Gerein had the sign created locally and with the assistance from the City of Merritt Public Works Department, had it installed in front of the Merritt RCMP Detachment,” the RCMP said in the statement.
Merrittonians are encouraged to this safe exchange zone between 8 in the morning and 6 in the evening on weekdays.
