Preliminary results from Saturday’s Sorrento-Blind Bay incorporation vote showed that the majority of residents voted against incorporation.
There were just 272 votes in favour of forming a new municipality on the south shore of Shuswap Lake with 2,027 votes against.
The vote against incorporation means the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’ Electoral Area ‘C’ will now be split into two smaller areas, each with its own CSRD director.
Had the proposal been successful, the District of Sorrento-Blind Bay would have formed become B.C.’s 162nd municipality.
The vote came about after a study that looked into the benefits of incorporating the two south Shuswap communities into one. At their March 17 meeting, the CSRD Board of Directors unanimously approved moving ahead with the referendum.
The Sorrento-Blind Bay area is home to roughly 5,000 people, while the rest of Electoral Area C is home to about 2,500 people.
The official results of the Sorrento-Blind Bay vote will be published before 4 p.m. this Wednesday, May 4.
Polls in the Sorrento-Blind Bay Incorporation Assent Vote have now closed. Preliminary results show 272 ballots in favour of Incorporation and 2027 against. Results are not official until certified by the Chief Election Officer. https://t.co/aswmk2dK1B #YourCSRD #CSRD pic.twitter.com/PXiZBeuuxX
