With an influx of people expected to descend into Riverside Park for Canada Day festivities this weekend, the City of Kamloops is urging caution.
Utility Services Manager Greg Wightman says they’re prepared for it even though a portion of Riverside Park is closed off because of high water and construction.
“We’ll make sure that we have folks monitoring everything that is going on at Riverside Park and really throughout the City,” he told NL News.
“We will have our Civic Operations crews working every day this weekend. We do expect some rain this weekend on Sunday, and with the catch basins covered the way they are right now, that leads to the possibility of some localized flooding and puddles, so if that is the case, we’ll have our crews respond.”
Wightman says he known people will want to spend time near the Thompson River, but he says it is not safe given how high it still is.
“Really the message for anyone going to Riverside Park or anywhere else this weekend is, ‘it’s going to be hot, it is going to be sunny,’ and people are going to want to be around the water, we get that.’ But again, we’re just continuing to remind people that its just not safe to be on the water or even around the water right now,” he said.
“We really want everyone to heed that advice heading into the long weekend.”
