A Kamloops doctor who was injured in a cycling accident two months ago died last week, his family confirmed on social media.
Andrew van der Westhuizen was biking along a multi-use pathway on Highland Road from Juniper Ridge when he collided with a water truck which was turning into a construction site in the area.
He was taken to Royal Inland Hospital with serious injuries, including a broken ribs and a concussion, and spent seven weeks in the intensive-care unit at Vancouver General Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries.
“Today, we said goodbye to one of the most wonderful, loving and kind human beings I have met, and will ever meet, my sweet husband,” Andrew’s wife, Jen van der Westhuizen, said in a June 30 facebook post.
“He had many titles, not limited to, but including; son, brother, husband, father, friend, colleague, teammate and neighbour. His warmth and love will be forever cherished and he will be greatly missed.”
Jen says Andrew, a radiologist at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, was surrounded by his mother, Carmel, his father Nicholas, and his brother Michael when he died.
“His medical staff worked tirelessly to try and get him home to us,” Jen added. “We are so grateful for the care provided to him.”
She also asked that people consider donating blood regularly and to also consider becoming an organ donor.
“Our whole life changed in an instant. Please hug your loved ones dear and make sure you are living your best lives,” Jen said, in a post today. “Andrew had one of his best, happiest years this last year and we were finally starting to reap the benefits of his hard work and dedication to his medical career.”
Since the crash there have been calls from both the family and cycling advocates hoping for better safety measures for cyclists in Kamloops.
