UPDATE 6 p.m. – No hazardous materials were spilled after a CP Rail train carrying grain derailed in Kamloops Wednesday afternoon.
In a brief email to NL News, CP Rail spokesperson, Salem Woodrow said there were no injuries reported.
“CP has dispatched crews and equipment in response to the incident, ” Woodrow said. “The incident is under investigation.”
It is not clear what caused the train to derail by the Thompson River around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Both the City of Kamloops and Kamloops Fire and Rescue are asking people to stay away from the area if they don’t need to be there, so that crews have the space they need to clean up the scene, though there is no estimate when that work might be completed.
This is the second train derailment in Kamloops in the past three months.
On April 2, five railcars derailed on the Canadian National rail line near the airport, but remained in an upright position. There were no fires, leaks or injuries reported in that particular incident.
